The Klezmatics share the lead single + video, “Un Du Akerst” (a worker’s anthem whose title translates to “And You Plow”) featuring La Manga & Lavender Light Gospel Choir. With words by Jewish political and cultural philosopher Chaim Zhitlowsky inspired by a poem from 19th-century German revolutionary Georg Herwegh, the track is a resistance-fueled Yiddish workers protest anthem that, while in line with traditional klezmer sound, exemplifies the cross-cultural solidarity heard throughout the project with the help of La Manga and Lavender Light Gospel Choir. Inspiring both action and solidarity, “Un Du Akerst” comes to a powerful refrain in which all the voices unite to exclaim “We deserve a living wage, Let the bosses feel our rage, Unified our pow’r is great, We’ll fight until we all are free!,” a sentiment relevant today, and always.

"Purple and Yellow" was inspired by Robin Wall Kimmerer’s Braiding Sweetgrass. In the book, Kimmerer recalls asking her botany professor why purple and yellow flowers so often grow together. He dismissed her question as an unserious scientific inquiry that belonged in art school, not the hard sciences. Years later, Kimmerer proved him wrong by discovering the rigorous scientific basis for their coexistence: these complementary colors actually help both species survive, reproduce, and ward off predators. Their reciprocal beauty is a functional expression of their willingness to show up for one another. At a time when the most vulnerable among us are under attack, this song is a love letter to the brave community members among us willing to stand up and protect our neighbors with direct action instead of waiting for permission from systems that weren’t built for us in the first place.

Woody Guthrie, father of American folk music, writer of “This Land Is Your Land,” also wrote Hanukkah songs!

In 1942, Woody Guthrie moved to Brooklyn and soon, through his mother-in-law (the renowned Yiddish poet Aliza Greenblatt), he became involved with the Coney Island Jewish Community. He wrote songs about Hanukkah, about Jewish history and about spiritual life.

After his death in 1967, these songs sat forgotten in archives. “Lost” for almost 30 years, Guthrie’s Hanukkah lyrics were discovered in 1998 by Woody’s daughter, Nora Guthrie. She was so inspired by what she found, she asked the Klezmatics to write new music for the lyrics. Woody Guthrie’s Happy Joyous Hanukkah is the second recorded release of this amazing material. Deftly intermingling Klezmer with American folk and bluegrass,Woody Guthrie’s Happy Joyous Hanukkah is destined to become a holiday classic for generations to come.

This delightful collection of songs, including ‘Hanuka’s Flame”, “Hanuka Gelt”, “Spin Dreydl Spin”, “(Do the) Latke Flip-Flip” and others, is among the best of Guthrie’s work, and the Klezmatics playful renditions cast a new light on the Hanukkah tradition.
